Members earn service credit for each year or partial year worked for the City of San Jose. It accumulates on an annual basis and is one of the factors used to calculate your future retirement benefits.
Your City of San Jose retirement benefits are based on your:
- Age at retirement
- Highest salary for either a 1 or 3-year period
- Years of service credit
To earn a full year of service credit during a Payroll Calendar year, you must work at least:
- 2,080 hours (Police and Fire Tier 1 employees)
- 2,080 hours (Police and Fire Tier 2 employees)
